Turkey’s bronze medalist Kılıç eyes pro boxing

“I’m thinking of going professional and it may happen at any time. If I take this step, I will not be able to attend the 2012 Olympic Games. Nevertheless, waving the Turkish flag after winning a title match will do as much advertising as an Olympic success. In other words, we will also continue to promote our country in professional boxing,” he said this week.

Kılıç is not the first as another promising boxer, Atagün Yalçınkaya, won the silver medal at the age of 17 in the men’s 48-kilograms at the 28th Summer Olympic Games in Athens four years ago. Yalçınkaya was then not allowed to join the Turkish national team for the Olympics in Beijing.

“Yalçınkaya’s boxing style is closer to professional boxing, which may have influenced this decision. I know Yalçınkaya’s personality and character. When your labor is not appreciated in this sport, you may grow bitter and unpleasant. In the final analysis, you have to go through all that pain. Sometimes you have three training sessions a day. When you are properly rewarded for your toil, you don’t feel motivated to work. After a while, the bitterness grows larger inside and things you don’t want to happen end up happening. Yalçınkaya’s case was like this. Then, he became a professional boxer.”

2012 will be different

Kılıç said Turkey begins to discuss who is to attend the Olympics just two months before the competition and that sportsmen are quickly forgotten after the Olympics end. “We lag considerably behind many countries,” he said.

The medal-winning boxer said that despite a lack of proper interest in the Olympics, people tend to criticize the small number of medals won at the Olympics. “Only two months before the Olympics, everyone started to talk about it. Journalists, too, did this. They ran headlines during this two-month period and when we returned from the Olympics, they criticized our medals. They wrote about this for some 10 days and then the issue was completely forgotten,” he said.

Kılıç was also critical of Turkey’s low participation levels. “Out of a population of 70 million, only 63 Turkish sportsmen attended the Olympics. This is a dismally small number. Having one sportsman for every 1.2 million people means that there are obviously some problems with us. If we want to be successful in the next Olympics, we must do things differently. Yet, as far as I can see, there currently are no such moves. For this reason, different results cannot be expected in 2012,” he said.

Kılıç stated that other clubs made him offers after the Olympics. “Some offered to pay up to twice as much as what Fenerbahçe is currently paying, but I am working for Fenerbahçe,” he said.

Noting that he has been boxing with Fenerbahçe since 2003, he added: “After I was acquired by Fenerbahçe, no one was able to beat me in Turkey. I became the champion in Turkey every year and in the end won a medal at the Olympics. My club sent 18 sportsmen to the Olympics and only I returned with a medal. With that in mind, I expected some reward from my club. I have no problems with Fenerbahçe.”

Gaziantepspor – Fenerbahçe maçı öncesi Kamil Ocak Stadyumu önünde iki kulübün taraftarları arasında çıkan kavgada 2 kişi yaralandı.
Karşılaşmanın başlamasına saatler kala Kamil Ocak Stadı çevresine gelen ve takımları lehine slogan atarak sevgi gösterilerinde bulunan Gaziantepspor taraftarları ile Fenerbahçe taraftarları stadın Müzeye bakan tarafında karşılaştı. Önce iki takım taraftarlarının tezahüratlarını karşılıklı küfürleşmeye dönüştürmeleriyle başlayan kavga daha sonra yerini küfürler ve taşlı � sopalı kavgaya bıraktı.

Olay yerine çok sayıda polis sevk edilirken, güvenlik güçlerinin müdahalesi ile kavga çok fazla büyümeden önlendi. Kavgada, Gaziantepspor taraftarları Gökhan Şimşek (21) ve Mehmet Bozkurt (19) atılan taşların kafalarına isabet etmeleri sonucu yaralandı. Yaralı taraftarlar Avukat Cengiz Gökçek Devlet Hastanesi’ne kaldırılarak tedavi altına alındı. Olaylar polisin müdahalesiyle büyümeden önlendi.
